Monthly Checks
- Check the controller display for any error codes or warnings
- Check system pressure (should be 1โ2 bar on the pressure gauge)
- Listen for any unusual noises from the outdoor unit
- Check that the outdoor unit has clear airflow on all sides
Seasonal Checks โ Spring
- Clear debris (leaves, twigs) from around and under the outdoor unit
- Check the condensate drain is clear and draining freely
- If your unit has washable air filters, clean them now
- If switching to cooling mode (for heat pump/AC systems), test the cooling function before warm weather arrives
Seasonal Checks โ Autumn
- Clear autumn leaves from around the outdoor unit
- Bleed all radiators to remove trapped air
- Test the heating system before cold weather โ don't wait for the first cold night to discover a problem
- Book your annual professional service if not already done
- Ensure the condensate drain is clear before potential freezing weather
Annual Professional Service
Once a year, have a qualified F-Gas certified engineer perform a full service. This covers refrigerant pressure checks, coil cleaning, electrical checks, and all the items that require specialist tools and qualifications. Attempting refrigerant work yourself is illegal without F-Gas certification.
What NOT to Do Yourself
- Never attempt to top up refrigerant โ this requires F-Gas certification
- Don't attempt electrical work inside the control panel
- Don't clean the evaporator coil fins with a pressure washer (can damage fins)
- Don't chip ice from the outdoor unit โ run the defrost cycle or call an engineer
