What Is dB(A)?
dB(A) is the A-weighted decibel scale, calibrated to represent how the human ear perceives sound. It's the standard measurement used for heat pump noise ratings.
Reference Points
- 30 dB(A): Library interior
- 40 dB(A): Quiet office, typical heat pump at 1m
- 50 dB(A): Light rain, refrigerator
- 60 dB(A): Conversation at 1m
Typical Heat Pump Noise Levels
- Very quiet models (e.g., Samsung Mono HT Quiet): 40 dB(A) at 1m
- Standard units: 44โ48 dB(A) at 1m
- Older units: 50โ55 dB(A) at 1m
UK Planning Rule
Permitted development requires noise not to exceed 42 dB(A) at 1m from a neighbour's window or door. Most modern units meet this at typical installation distances.
