Heat Pump Planning Permission UK: Do You Need It?

Permitted Development (England)

ASHPs can usually be installed without planning permission under permitted development rights, provided: only one per property, not on a wall facing a highway, noise below 42 dB(A) at neighbour's window, not a listed building.

Conservation Areas and AONBs

In conservation areas and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, restrictions are more severe. Wall-mounted units may require planning permission. Check with your local planning authority.

Listed Buildings

Listed Building Consent is required for any heat pump installation on a listed building.

Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland

Permitted development rules differ between UK nations. Always verify with your local authority if in doubt.
