Underfloor Heating with a Heat Pump: The Perfect Combination

Why UFH and Heat Pumps Are the Perfect Match

Underfloor heating (UFH) and air source heat pumps are widely regarded as the optimal heating combination for UK homes. The reason is simple: both technologies operate most efficiently at lower temperatures. UFH works best at flow temperatures of 35–45°C, while heat pumps achieve their highest efficiency (CoP) at exactly these temperatures.

How UFH Delivers Comfortable Heat

UFH distributes heat evenly across the entire floor surface, creating radiant warmth throughout the room. Unlike radiators that create warm and cool zones, UFH maintains consistent temperatures from floor to ceiling. This means a thermostat set to 20°C feels warmer with UFH than with radiators, allowing you to heat the room to a lower air temperature for the same perceived comfort.

Flow Temperature Comparison

  • Standard radiators: 60–70°C flow temperature required
  • Modern low-temperature radiators: 45–55°C
  • Underfloor heating: 35–45°C

At 35°C flow temperature, a heat pump might achieve CoP 4.5. At 60°C, the same unit might achieve CoP 2.5.

Retrofitting UFH in UK Homes

Wet UFH can be retrofitted in existing properties using thin-profile systems designed to minimise floor height increase. These systems add as little as 15mm to the floor level and can be installed under new floor finishes. The cost is £50–£120/m² including materials and labour.
